THE NEAL/NELSON FAMILY

INTRODUCTION

I am Kathleen-Johnson Stewart. I am the daugher of William Thomas Johnson and Barbara Jean Caldwell, granddaughter of Benjamin Wesley Caldwell and Fannie Mae Crockett, great granddaughter of John Caldwell,Sr and Lelia Nelson, great great granddaughter of James Nelson and Mary Jane (?) and great great great granddaughter of Fannie Neal.

FANNIE NEAL

Fannie, my great great great grandmother, was born around 1820 in Maryland. She was born during slavery.

She was the mother of two children: James and Elizabeth. The father is unknown.

When the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, Fannie was 43 years old. When the 13th amendment was passed by congress in 1865 over 3,953,000 slaves became free during that year. Sousan, Elizabeth, James and his family were among those statistics.

1870 was the year when former slaves first appeared in the federal census by their full name. The census had misspelled names and discrepancies in ages. Prior to the 1870 census (1850 and 1860) slaves were listed under the slave owners name. They were listed by age, sex and color: black or mulatto.

Fannie was listed in the 1870 census for Pike County, Georgia. She was listed as 50 years old. Her occupation was a farm laborer and her name was listed as Fannie Neal. She was living with her son James Nelson and daughter-in-law Mary Jane. Also living in the household was Elizabeth Neal age 4.

Fannie died between the 1870-1880 federal census.

JAMES NELSON AND MARY JANE (UNKNOWN)

James Nelson, my great great grandfather, was the son of Fannie Neal. The father is unknown. He was born during slavery around 1843 in Pike County, Georgia.

He married Mary Jane - date is unknown. Mary was born about 1845 in Pike County, Georgia. Her parents are unknown.

When the emancipation proclaimation was issued in 1863 James was 20 years old and Mary was 18 years old.

The following Nelson's were among those freed: James age 22, Mary age 20, children: Chappel age 3 and Charles age 2.

James and Mary had two more children prior to the 1870 census: Mack born about 1866 and William born about 1868.

The Nelson family was listed in the 1870 census for Pike County, Georgia. James age 28 was a farm laborer, Mary age 24 was a house keeper, children: Chappel age 8 was not attending school, Charles age 6 was not attending school, Mack age 4 and William age 2.

James and Mary had four more children between 1871 and 1877: Jimmy born about 1871, Lelia (my great grandmother) born about 1875, Emmer born about 1875 and Ida born about 1877.

They were listed in the 1880 census for Pike County, Georgia. James was a farmer, Mary was a laborer, Chappel was a laborer - age 18, Charles was a laborer - age 16, Mack was laborer - age 14, William was laborer - age 11, Lelia was 9 and not in school, Emmer was 5 and not in school, and Ida was 2.

Two more children were born to James and Mary: Wallace born about 1887 and Robert born about 1893.

James and Mary were not listed in the 1900 census for Pike County, Georgia. They possibly died between 1893-1900 (after the birth of their last child and the 1900 census).

CHILDREN OF JAMES AND MARY JANE NELSON, IN ORDER OF BIRTH

CHAPPEL NELSON

Chappel Nelson was the 1st child born to James and Mary around 1862 in Pike County, Georgia. He married Judy Milner on November 30, 1880 in Pike County, Georgia. She was born about 1862 in Georgia. Their children: James born about 1881, John born about 1883, David born about 1885, Julius born about 1887, Edward born about 1889, Albert born about 1892, Alberta born about 1893, Molly born about 1895, George was born about 1897, Emma born about 1899, Mamie born about 1901 and Frank born about 1902. All were born in Georgia.

Between 1902 and 1904 Chappel and his family moved to Fresno County, California.

There they had one more child: Julia born July 11, 1904. Judy died shortly after Julia was born on July 15, 1904.

Chappel married Della Pilkington on Dec 18, 1906 in Bowles, California. She was born about 1879 in Georgia.

Chappel died in 1930 in Fresno County, California and Della died in 1922 in Fresno County, California.

CHARLES NELSON

Charles Nelson was the 2nd child born to James and Mary Nelson. He was born about 1863 in Pike County, Georgia. He married Anna (?) around 1887. She was born about 1873 in Georgia. Their children: Jesse born about 1893, Jiny born about 1896, Winy born about 1897, Bernice born about 1901, Bev born about 1904, Dora born about 1906, and Roza born about 1908.

Anna died between 1908-1909.

Charles married Dink (?) around 1909. She was born about 1886 in Georgia. Dink had two children from a previous marriage: Jimmie Louis born about 1903 and William born about 1905 both born in Georgia.

It is not known when Charles and his family died.

MACK NELSON

Mack Nelson was the 3rd child born to James and Mary Nelson. He was born about 1866 in Pike County, Georgia. It is not known when he died.

WILLIAM NELSON

William Nelson was the 4th child born to James and Mary Nelson. He was born about 1868 in Pike County, Georgia. He married Ella (?) around 1890. She was born about 1874 in Georgia. Their children: Claude born about 1891, Clarence born about 1891, Jimmie born about 1896 and Roberta born about 1900 - all born in Georgia.

It is not known what happen to William and his family.

JIMMY NELSON

Jimmy Nelson was the 5th child born to James and Mary Nelson. He was born about 1871 in Pike County, Georgia. He married Mary (?) around 1901. She was born about 1875 in Georgia. Mary had three children from a previous marriage:Will Dewberry born about 1891, Jimmie Dewberry born about 1894 and Ernest Dewberry born about 1897 all in Georgia.

It is not known what happen to Jimmy and his family.

LELIA NELSON

Lelia Nelson, was my great grandmother. She was the 6th child born to James and Mary Nelson - born about 1875 in Pike County, Georgia. She married my great grandfather, John Caldwell around 1892. He was born about 1870 in Pike County, Georgia.

Their children: Mary Ann born about 1893, James Walter born about 1895, Leroy born about 1897, Otis Bishop born about 1900, Irene born about 1902, Benjamin (my grandfather) born about 1905, Hassie born about 1907 and John,Jr born about 1908.

Lelia died in 1914 in Pike County, Georgia.

John then married Dink (?) in 1915 in Pike County, Georgia. She was born in 1890 in Pike County, Georgia.

John, Sr died in 1924 in Pike County, Georgia. No further information on Dink.

EMMER NELSON

Emmer Nelson was the 7th child born to James and Mary Nelson. She was born about 1875 in Pike County, Georgia. No other information is known about Emmer.

IDA NELSON

Ida Nelson was the 8th child born to James and Mary Nelson. She was born about 1877 in Pike County, Georgia. She married John B. West around 1895. He was born about 1873 in Georgia.

Ida had a daughter prior to marrying John: Blanche born about 1894 in Pike County, Georgia.

Ida and John had 10 children: Maud born about 1897, Silonia born about 1900, Viola born about 1902, Ruby born about 1904, Vera born about 1906, Eloise born about 1908, John, Jr born about 1910, Celeste born about 1912, James born about 1913, and Ethel Kate born about 1916 all born in Pike County, Georgia.

No other information is known about this family.

WALLACE NELSON

Wallace Nelson was the 9th child born to James and Mary Nelson. He was born about 1881 in Pike County, Georgia. No other information is known about Wallace.

ROBERT NELSON

Robert Nelson was the 10th and last child born to James and Mary Nelson. He was born about 1893 in Pike County, Georgia. He married Letha Freeman around 1909. She was born about 1891 in Pike County, Georgia.

Their children: Bertha born about 1903, Ruby born about 1907 and Ralph born about 1917 all born in Pike County, Georgia.

Between 1917-1925 Robert and his family moved to Columbus, Ohio.

In 1925 Robert, Jr was born.

Robert and Mary had another daughter Wilma - date of birth is unknown. Her name was in the obituary of her father.

Robert, Sr died in 1949 in Columbus, Ohio and Letha died in 1977 in Columbus, Ohio
