Wills and Marriage of Early Settlers

NOTE from the book, "The Mecklenburg Signers and Their Neighbors", by Worth S. Ray

Robert Davis, His Will; probated in Mecklenburg County, N.C. Oct. 7, 1836. (This Robert Davis was deceased at the time of his father's will(Robert Davis) in 1737, and is not mentioned therein for that reason. He mentions in the will the name of his wife Margaret Davis, andhis cchildren.
1. Eldest son Alexander G. Davis
2. Second Soon, Israil P. Davis, to whom he leaves what he calls the "mcCrory Plantation."
3 Youngest son, john N.Davis,

Another son of James Davis and a brothe or Robert Davis shown above was Israel pickens I vis, who had been dead some 10 years at the time his brother Robert a-vis died, as is shown by the following tombstone records page 261 of "Acklens Tenn. Records"
Sacred to the memor of Israel Pickens Davis of Waxhaw, Mecklenbury County, N.C., who was returning home from visiting the Western District of Tenn., departed this life Nov. 5, 1826, age 45 yyears.
His remains were interred in what, is known as the John Matthews cemetery, six miles south of Columbia, Tenn. The following is a copy of the inscriptio on one of the early tombs of the Matthews cemetery, located near the present residence of T.H. Neely. This was the home of Eqr., John Matthews, who gove the cemetery, and whose descendants have composed someof the best citizens of Maury Co. Tenn. (A condesnsed descriptionof the tomb inscripton follows):
Israel Pickens Davis was traveling with Richard Peeples,and had rode to the Chickasaw Bluffs (now Memphis, Tenn.) and was teturning to Waxhaw. Davis took seriously ill at his former neighbor's ohn Matthews. He died and was buried there. Peeples took his valuables andhorse ansaddle, etc. to Davis's wife, who some years afterwards moved hier family to Maury County, Tenn. settled head Bigbyvill Tenn., associated with the A.R.P. church and their son James Davis was ruling elder inthe Hopewell church. James died about 1826 buried beside his father Israel P. Davis (This was written inNov. 1909 by a son of Richard Peeples.



James Davis, His will, Probated in Mecklenburg County, N.C. April 18, 1837. Will Book E. Page 177 mentions.

CROCKETT

Notes from "The Mecklenburg Signers and Their Neighbors", by Worth S.Ray.
Archibald Crockett, his wife proved in Mecklenburg County, N.C. Jan 3, 1804 (his wife was a King) mentions:
1. Son, Elias Crockett, land where I live
2. Daughter, Ann Crockett, wife of a Mr. Taylor, tract of land where Frederick Taylor lives (evidently Ann married Frederick Taylor)>
3. Son John Crockett, to him i will and gequeath a tract and parcel of land now lying in the hands of Col. Thomas King, now living inthe State ofTenn., in Hawkins county, and all the rest of my property, except one woman's saddle, t be taken out for my daughter mary ann>
Executores: Son John Crockett and SamuelDowns, in the presence of Eli Crocket and Clias Crocket

The above will of the grandfather of the celebrated and famous David (Davy) Crockett, his fahte being the son of John Crockett mentioned in the will. This will refutes the idea that the father of "David Crockett" was a penniless "back woodsman" in Ten, and shows that he was a close kinsman of the Honorable Thomas King, an uncle, who lived in and helped to corgaize Hawkins County, Tenn,. (in 1786), and who served from that diestrict in the Legislature of N.C.


KING

William KIng, his wife, probated in Mecklenbur County, N.C. on NOv. 1, 1788. Will BookD Page 138 mentions: My dear wife mary Ann King, my four children.

Executors named are Archibald Crockett and John King.
Witnesses, were Eli Crockett, john Elliott and Henry Downs

This William Kind lived somewhere East of Providence church, of which Archilbald Crockett ws one of the first elders. He ws the great-grandfather of the famous David (Davy) Crockett of Tenn. and TExas, his daughte having married Archibald Crockett, the Henry downs who signed this will as one of the witness was a Signer of the Mecklenburg Declaration on May 20, 1775

Elijah Crockett, married Mary Davie, who was a sister of Willliam Richardson Davie, the familous N.C. Statesman and purist.
Elizabeth Crockett, married Joseph Wallis, April 10, 1823, She was the daughter of Eligah and Mary Davie Crockett, and Joseph Wallis was the son of Rev. Jame Wallis, the son-in-law of ohn McKnitt Alexander
John M.Crockett married Levicy C. Barnett, Sept. 29, 1828
Margaret Crockett married John McKnitt Wallis, son of Rev. James wallis in 1813
Margaret Crockett married William Morrow March 7, 1794
Sarah Jane Taylor married John Sharp of Sept 18, 1854.
