LEETE, JARED

In 1940, Eleanor Early reported that two Colonial houses belonging to the Leete family once stood on Broad Street in Guilford, CT. She identifies the owners as "Governor Leete" and Jared Leete. The Compendium of American Genealogy (Vol. VII, pg. 599) says this Jared's house was still in the Leete family as late as 1925 (the date the Compendium was published.)

Eleanor Early says the quick-witted Jared was known in town for naughty poetry and ribald verse. The anecdote she shares says that one day Jared Leete dropped in at a neighbor's farmhouse and asked for a drink of cider.

"If you write me an epitaph, I'll give you one," said the housewife, with her mind's eye on a nice stone on Guilford Green.

Jared could make rhymes as fast as he could talk.

"Margaret, who died of late
Ascended up to heaven's gate," he said.

And Margaret, pleased as could be, brought him the cider. Downing it at a gulp, he continued:

"But Gabriel met her with a club
And drove her down to Beelzebub."
