Browning K. Baker began his sea career at the age of fourteen. By the age of 22 he was a captain. He worked on coasting schooners, which transported heavy bulk goods such as coal. At some point in his career, he became a member of the Boston Marine Society. His papers are housed at the Sturgis Library in Barnstable, MA.
He was the Captain and part owner of the schooner Colin C. Baker. The ship was a three-masted schooner built in Bath, ME in March 1873. The ship’s home port was Boston. Capt. Baker was the only commander of the Colin C. Baker for the ship’s entire career, until 1917, except for a brief time in the late 1890’s.
The Colin C. Baker was lost at sea September 16, 1917, near Sudan. The entire crew was saved.
Browning K. Baker was born 22 February 1839, and died in 1920. In 1870 he married Abbie F. Baxter, daughter of Obed Baxter.
