NATHANIEL AND JOHN BACON
The Bacon family is a large, esteemed Cape Cod family. You
probably know there were lawyers, judges, etc. among their number. Here are the
anecdotes: The original settler, Nathaniel Bacon, was a successful tanner. He
built a big two-story house in a time when most others had only small, one-story
homes. The house was set on oak sills that projected into the rooms and provided
seating. The house stood for 200 years, and when it was finally torn down, it is
said that the timbers were as hard as iron. Nathaniel's son John also did well
for himself. You may be able to obtain a copy of his will, or you might find
portions of that will online. Highlights:
- He left his best hat and wig to his son Nathaniel.
- His son Judah got the house and the whole family orchard, but he was instructed to give the other
children the fruit from five trees each for seven years.
- He left his servants (Dinah and Calash) to his wife. After his wife's death, the servants were to be
sold, with the money going to purchase bibles to be distributed to his
grandchildren.
