He went to sea at the young age of nine years, which would be about 1835. He retired from the sea in 1880, which would make his career 45 years long. When he retired, it is said he had been a sea Captain for 35 years.
"They have lost two sons and have one daughter living: Almena, now Mrs. D. H. Perry, who has two daughters, Minnie R. and Eva L."
