July 2004 - John Kidney's Desertion and Appeal

I believe the following refers to JOHANNES KIDNEY [Roelof, John/Jan] who, born in 1724, would have been 22 at the time of this petition - a likely militia age. However, there are other possibilities:


To his Excellency George Clinton Esq'r Cap'n General & Gouvernour and Commander in Cheaf at and over The Province of new York and The Territories Thereon depending in America Vice Admiral of The Same and vice Admiral of The Red Squadron of His Majesties Fleet.

May it Please your Excellency To Grant leave to your Excell's most Humble Petition'rs That wee may acquaint Your Excell'cy first th't wee Inlisted last fall on ye 9th & 10th day of october vollanteers for Eleven months at farth't to go to Oswego where wee remained until The 28th day of Septemb'r. Seeing The Provision was almost spent and not hearing of a releave - being convenc'd if we all remain'd Their must Infalibly Starve for want - As also seeing the uncomm'n Extroard'y dry Season made us afraid it would be almost Impossible to pass ye Wood Creek with Batoes & Provision and for Sundry other reasons wee Twenty five men Left osweago ye 28th day of Last Month as afores'd Came afoot and arrived here the Eleventh of this Ins't being a full twelve month after the time we listed altho we have many reasons to compla'n - wee only beg of your Excellency to order that wee may soon be paid our money which wee much want to buy necessar's as also that for ye future a Steward may be ordered Sworn to deliver ye Provisions & according to act of General Assembly and wee your Excellenc's most humble Pettitioners as in Duty bound Shall ever play ----
