Fourth of July
When I was a small boy living in the small town of Beaver City, Nebraska; one of the big events of the summer was the 4th of July.
I don't remember any big fireworks shows but I do remember firecrackers!
I guess there weren't many laws about fireworks in those days because it seemed that lots of different ones were for sale. It also seemed like they all had Chinese sounding names.
One problem was getting money to buy the fireworks. Lots of lawn mowing jobs and bottle collection trips were necessary to get enough money to buy enough packages of fireworks to put on a good show.
Of course another way of doing this was to hang around the rich kids that had lots of fireworks.
Whichever method was used, the firecrackers were exploded in around and under every can, bottle, jar, and board that could be found.
This went on for about three days and then they were all gone . . .
Remaining were the ringing ears. In fact, I still have a ringing in my left ear that could very well have been caused by the long ago 4th of July days.
