John Guthrie Bowman and Margaret Jane Kinnear

John Guthrie Bowman, (1870-1951) the 3rd born child of John Guthrie Bowman and Mary Ann Hogg, a merchant and spirit dealer, married Margaret Jane Kinnear (1874-1951), in 1900 in Dundee.

John G. Bowman and Margaret Jane Kinnear had four children - three girls and one boy all born in Dundee, Scotland. Isabella Hogg Bowman (1901-1970), John Guthrie Bowman (1902-1923), Gladys Margaret Jane Bowman (1904-1988) and Agnes Bowman (living).

Margaret Jane Kinnear, was born in 1874,
in  Forfar, Scotland to James Kinnear and
Isabella Orrock Birrell.

Mother Isabella Orrock, was born 4th
January 1837 and died in 1910. Isabella
first married David Birrell 20th June 1862
 in Inverarity and Methy and had Isabella
Orrick Birrell, twins, David and James Birrell,
who died in infancy, and Charles Orrock Birrell.

David Birrell died in 1866. Isabella Orrock,
secondly married James Kinnear 19th August 1871
 and had children:
 William Hill Kinnear
&
Margaret Jane Kinnear.

John owned a grocery store listed
 in the 1899/1900 Dundee Directory
 at 89 Strathmartine Road.

History of Bowman Grocery Store

John became bankrupt at the beginning of World War I due to
 his generous nature. He extended credit to many of his customers
 who were unable to repay their debt.

 

 

89 Strathmartine is now 117 Strathmartine Road
 and the current occupants of the
building is Frew's Public House

IMMIGRATION TO THE UNITED STATES

Husband, John Guthrie Bowman arrived
 from Liverpool in the United States in
1916.

John established a new home in
Kansas City,
 Missouri and then sent for
 his wife
and children in 1919.

Margaret and her four children
 departed
from the Port of Glasgow
on the steamship
S. S. Columbia bound for America.
They arrived in New York City.
