John Guthrie Bowman, born 25th of January 1837, Ward of Carnegie, Parish of Carmyllie, Scotland, was the 6th born child of John Bowman and Helen Guthrie. John Guthrie Bowman married Mary Ann Hogg 8 December 1865, in the Parish of Panbride. Mary Ann Hogg, born the 24th of March 1840 in
Parish of Barry, Angus, Scotland was the daughter of Alexander Hogg, senior slater, and Ann Scott.

  • Annie Scott Bowman, b. 1868, suffered a serious injury sometime after 1893, and had to be place in a nursing home. She died, 1926 at Maryfield, formerly known as Eastern Hospital and is buried in a pauper's grave in Dundee's Eastern Cemetery. Annie Scott Bowman never married.

  • John Guthrie Bowman, b. 1870, merchant and spirit dealer, married Margaret Jane Kinnear in 1900 in Dundee. John owned a grocery store listed in the 1899/1900 Dundee Directory at 89 Strathmartine Road. His home was located at 13 Balfour Street. John became bankrupt in the early years of World War I due to his generous nature. He extended credit to many of his customers who were unable to repay their debt. 89 Strathmartine is now 117 Strathmartine Road and the current occupants of the building is Frew's Public House. In 1917 he immigrated to the United States, found employment and housing in Kansas City, Missouri, and sent for his wife, Margaret Jane Kinnear and four children in 1919.

  • Alexander 'Sandy' Hogg Bowman, b. 1872, served in World War I and the Boer War. Went to Canada after World War I to pan for gold. Married Beatrice Hamilton and had three children. Sandy died in 1935 and is buried at Kirkland Lake Cemetery, Temiskarming Twp, Huron County, Ontario, Canada

  • George Stirling Bowman, b. 1875, merchant and spirit dealer, married Jessie McIntosh Robertson in Dundee, Scotland. George, in the 1899/1900 Dundee Directory, is listed as a grocer and wine merchant with a store at 173-175 Scouringburn. George listed his home address as 13 Balfour Street. A lot of the Scouringburn has been demolished. In the mid 1900s Dundee University took over an area of Dundee and demolished old property to build residences, etc. They left some of the road and used the old street names so you can see where Balfour Street was - plus the cobbles used as a road surface. George served three years in the Fife and Forfar Regiment and served in the 47th Battalion British Columbia Regiment for Canada. George was killed in action in Belgium, 11 November 1916. His name is listed on the Vimy Memorial, near Calais, France.

  • Cecilia Hogg Bowman, b. 1878, married Mr. William J. Gill, and immigrated first to Haileybury, Ontario, Canada, and later moved to East Liverpool, Ohio. William J. Gill was born in 1881 in Buffalo, New York. His father Henry Gill, a deck hand on the steamer Algoma, died in the shipwreck of the Algoma near Isle Royale, in U. S. international waters, Michigan, on November 7, 1885. Algoma Shipwreck

  • Susan Hogg Bowman, b. 1880, married Charles Kidd (1879-1948), a letterpress printer, and immigrated to East Liverpool, Ohio before World War I in about 1911. They had seven children - the first three were born in Dundee, Scotland: 1) Alexander Kidd, b .1905 Dundee; 2) Charles Bowman Kidd, b. 1907, Dundee; and 3) Marian Bowman Kidd b. 1 August 1910, d. at age 1 month, died 4th Sept 1910, (listed on the headstone of grandparents John Guthrie Bowman and Mary Ann Hogg in Balgay Cemetery, Dundee, Scotland). The remaining four children were born in the United States: 4) George Bowman Kidd, 1912; Robert Campbell Kidd, b. bet 1913-1918; Susan Louise Kidd, b. 1919; and Dorothy Margaret Kidd, b. 1923. Susan and sister Cecilia owned the Keystone Printing Press. Husband Charles Kidd is found in the list of immigrants applying for citizenship in Columbiana County, Ohio.

  • Mary Ann Hogg Bowman, b. 1883, married, Robert Davie Smith, and immigrated to East Liverpool, Ohio before World War I. Both Mary and Robert are found in the list of immigrants applying for citizenship in Columbiana County, Ohio.

DUNDEE, SCOTLAND

 

At the time of his death, John Guthrie Bowman was employed as a Lorry Driver. His death certificate lists his cause of death as "contusions to the abdomens 3 days." Family folklore states that John was in the farmyard training a horse, when a young stable boy started teasing the horse. The agitated horse kicked John in the abdomen and he died as a result of his injuries.

 

BALGAY CEMETERY, Lochee Park, DUNDEE, SCOTLAND

John Guthrie Bowman and wife Mary Ann Hogg are buried in the Balgay Cemetery located in Lochee Park, in Lair 1319, on a wooded hill, across the street from the World War I Memorial. John Guthrie Bowman died 6th September 1890 and Mary Ann Hogg died 16th March 1903.

John G. Bowman, Mary Ann Hogg, and Grandchild Marion B. Kidd are buried in Lair 1318. Daughter Ann S. Bowman is not buried in this cemetery. Annie died 26th February 1926, Maryfield Hospital. She was buried in an unmarked pauper's grave, located in the centre of the cemetery, in a large grassy area, in Dundee's Eastern Cemetery. George Stirling Bowman is not buried here either - burial location unknown.
